We will spend the first month of school learning how to choose "just right books."  It is so important for the students to read independently.  In order for them to enjoy doing so, they need to find books that are slightly challenging as well as interesting to them.  The children will be asked to read for 15 minutes each night.  This is the most important homework they will have.

As we learn more about what good readers do,  we will discuss how we can use what we already know to help us understand what we read.  The students will make connections between their own lives and the situations they are reading about.  They will also make connections between texts they have already read.
